Love the Problem: Why the Best Businesses Are Built Around Solving What Matters

One of the best pieces of business advice I have heard recently was not about strategy, growth, sales, or leadership. It was about loving the problem you solve.

At first, that might sound strange. Nobody wants problems to exist. Nobody wants clients to struggle, employees to feel frustrated, or organizations to experience challenges. But loving the problem is not about enjoying the challenge someone is facing. It is about being deeply committed to understanding it and finding better ways to solve it.

The best businesses are not built only by people who love what they sell. They are built by people who care deeply about the impact they create.

Why Loving the Problem Matters

Every business has difficult seasons. Growth slows down, challenges become complicated, and the answers are not always obvious. If you only love the success that comes from solving a problem, those difficult moments can quickly become frustrating.

But when you genuinely love the problem you solve, the work itself becomes energizing. You stay curious, continue learning, ask better questions, and remain committed to finding stronger solutions because you care about the people impacted by the problem.

That mindset is what creates long-term success. It shifts the focus from simply delivering a service to continuously improving the way you create value.

The Problem We Love Solving

For me, that problem is helping organizations understand their people.

Employee engagement, leadership effectiveness, communication challenges, and putting the right people in the right seats are not new problems. Organizations have been working through these challenges for decades.

But that is exactly why the work matters.

I love helping leaders understand why a great employee may be struggling in a role. I love uncovering the disconnect between expectations and reality. I love helping teams communicate differently because they finally understand each other.

Many workplace challenges are not caused by a lack of effort or a lack of good people. Often, they happen because people do not have clarity, are not aligned with their strengths, or are operating in environments that make success harder than it needs to be.

Solving those problems creates stronger organizations and better experiences for the people inside them.

Great Leaders Learn to Love Problems

The same idea applies to leadership. The best leaders are not the ones who avoid problems or pretend challenges do not exist. They are the ones willing to get curious about what is really happening.

When performance drops, strong leaders look beyond the surface. They ask whether expectations are clear, whether the person has the tools they need, and whether the role aligns with how that individual naturally works.

When communication breaks down, they do not ignore the tension. They look for the gaps creating frustration and work to solve the root cause instead of repeatedly managing the symptoms.

That curiosity is what separates leaders who constantly put out fires from leaders who build stronger teams.

The Work That Never Gets Old

One of the biggest indicators that you truly love the problem you solve is that you can continue having similar conversations and still care deeply about the outcome.

Helping organizations unlock potential already sitting inside their workforce never gets old. Watching leaders gain clarity never gets old. Seeing employees move into roles where they can truly thrive never gets old.

I do not love that organizations experience these challenges. I do not love seeing leaders frustrated, teams disconnected, or employees struggling in roles where they could be more successful.

But I do love helping organizations solve those problems.

Build Around the Problem, Not Just the Solution

The strongest businesses are not always built by people who simply love their product or service. Products change, strategies evolve, and markets shift.

What lasts is the commitment to solving a meaningful problem.

When you love the problem, you continue improving. You continue adapting. You continue looking for better answers because your focus is not just on what you provide, but on the people you are helping.

That is what creates work worth doing.
